YouTube is making inroads into the pay TV market. It has inked a deal with Dish which makes the latter the first pay-TV company in the United States that enables its customers to play any and all videos from YouTube right on its set-top box. Dish Hopper 3 is the first DVR to support a native YouTube experience in what’s most certainly an industry-first.

Having a native YouTube experience in the DVR itself means that Dish customers who have a Hopper 3 DVR hooked up to their TV can play videos through the set-top box alongside conventional TV service. Those who have this DVR installed will now be able to search and play YouTube videos without even having to switch devices or inputs. It doesn’t get easier than that on TV.

A native YouTube app is bundled in the latest software update that was released to Hopper 3 DVRs a couple of days ago. The DVR also has other streaming video apps like Netflix, Vevo, and Pandora, so YouTube will be joining an esteemed gathering of streaming services.

There’s also a symbolic importance attach to this, YouTube landing on a pay-TV DVR means that content available on the online video streaming giant now have a level playing field against conventional TV.
